The Hoka Mach X2 is a cushioned and bouncy speed-training shoe designed to handle long miles. Like the $225 Skyward X, it has a smooth rolling ride and comfort combined with pep—the difference here is that it's as fun as it is fast. Where the Skyward X goes for cushion and support above all else, the Mach X2 is a versatile workhorse, just as comfortable trotting along on a family jog as it is blasting 800 meter repeats with the boys. Some runners have reported discomfort with the back part of the upper, but we haven't experienced that issue across 50+ miles when wearing socks with cushion over the Achilles. This is our top pick for marathon training in 2024. If you're looking for something more streamlined with even more speed, however, check out the Brooks Hyperion or Asics Magic Speed 4. And if you want your cushioned shoe to give you comfort instead of a fast ride, consider the Asics Glideride Max or Brooks Glycerin Max.
