The Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro 3 Beta is a positively preposterous shoe. Absolutely asinine. Abjectly absurd. It's so sickeningly silly that there is no arrangement of alliterative adjective-adverb pairings that do this shoe justice. It's a wacky weapon for race day. With a stack height cresting 70mm in our pair of 10.5 mens shoes, it's double the height of a standard training shoe like the New Balance Rebel v3. Your foot sits atop THREE INCHES of foam (we measured). There's 40mm of foam here just below the plate—a number only legal because of creative trickeration Mizuno employs to skirt the World Athletics 40mm limit for racing shoes. Once we got past the stiletto-like stack height and dangerously unstable platform, the ride here was actually fun. The foam is a legit racing compound, bouncy, lightweight, comfortable and soft. The only issue is that the stack height makes the shoe feel mushy in the heel and awkward for everything except running fast in a straight line. This is a cool development project and prototype product for Mizuno, but we don't recommend this shoe as a race day pick for anyone. If you're seeking out a new experience, this will certainly deliver a different feel than anything you've tried. For a legit racer with an aggressive feel but better stability and less much, consider the previous version of this shoe, the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro 2. For almost-illegal bounce, we recommend the soft, supportive and fun Hoka Cielo X1. We are looking forward to what else Mizuno plans to do with this new foam.
